Winter rides are here again! As it’ll be dark at 4pm before you know it there’s no pressure to get out and ride before it’s dark and rides now start slightly later at 7pm. The routes chosen for winter rides are generally better lit and use larger roads so it’s much safer than riding the country lanes at this time of the year.
There are two options for Tuesday evening winter rides.
- 7:00pm hill-training ride. This ride follows a designated City Lights route (GPX and TCX) taking in most of Winchester’s hills at least once (22 miles, 500+ metres of climbing) at a steady (14-16mph) pace. There’s a picture of the route here. No one gets dropped on this ride as riders re-group after every hill.
- 7:00pm chain-gang. This ride follows a designated Winter Route (29 miles) and includes riding through and off, should conditions permit. Depending on numbers there will be one or two groups. Load the route into your Garmin as it’s possible you’ll get dropped and have to make your way back home alone!
Remember the route files are zipped so will need to be unzipped before loading on to a GPS device. Windows and MacOS unzip compressed files by double-clicking them.
Both rides leave from The Winchester Hotel. LIGHTS REQUIRED.
Previously we’ve also run a ‘Sunday Club ride but on a Tuesday’ starting at 6:30pm. This was a medium-paced, sociable ride which got you back by 8.30 with nobody dropped. If you think you’d like to offer to lead such a ride on a regular basis get in touch. We know there’s interest from members in this.
The Club welcomes youth riders participating on our Club and training rides as long as membership and parental consent is in place beforehand. U16s will need to be in the company of a parent or guardian unless specific permission has been sought ahead of riding from the Club Secretary. Youth riders should bear in mind the required average pace and duration of the ride and be comfortable in achieving these before participating.
