Tuesday Evening Summer Rides

Summer Tuesday Evening Rides start from Tuesday 30th March 2021, leaving from The Winchester Hotel & Spa at 6:30 pm. There are two rides: A and B.  Please note that LIGHTS ARE REQUIRED.

A Ride

The A Ride will be a fast training ride. As usual, the focus is on a smooth, safe ride, concentrating on working hard and maintaining good riding form. Riders are required to be entirely self sufficient, although ‘pairing up’ is required for U18s.

In general, we will not stop for mechanicals or dropped riders. We will ride through-and-off where the roads permit. Average speeds expected to be 21-22 mph. Attacking riding is permitted on the ‘Col de Kingsworthy’ and we will have a brief regroup at the King Charles pub in Kings Worthy, before spinning home.

The A Ride route GPX is: Alresford – Spiers Lane – Northington – East Stratton – Micheldever

The A Ride may choose to follow the B Ride route and just set off a few minutes earlier. This then gives riders a chance to pick up the following B Ride if they fall off the back.

B Ride

The B Ride follows a variety of routes that are shown in the table below. There is no designated leader responsible for the ride. The B Ride speed averages 18-20 mph, but may be higher depending upon who is there on the night. B Rides, although a slightly slower pace, follow the same rules as the A Ride. Riders are required to be entirely self sufficient as the ride will not necessarily stop for mechanicals or dropped riders. The B Ride will also ride through-and-off where the roads permit.

Those that might want to form a slower paced ride (C Ride) are welcome to come along with fellow members and see if there are others on the night not wanting to ride one of the faster pace rides. There are suggested C Ride route GPX files detailed below which are slightly shorter than the B Rides.

Young Riders

The Club welcomes youth riders participating on our Club rides as long as membership and parental consent is in place beforehand. For the ‘non drop’ social rides, only U16s also need to be accompanied by a parent, guardian or designated adult member as long as specific permission has been sought ahead of riding from the Club Secretary.

As Tuesday training rides are ‘drop rides’ and so different to our Sunday social rides which are not, it is important that U18s (and not just U16s) participate only on the basis of being accompanied by a parent, guardian or designated adult member who will remain responsible for their riding and well-being. U18s will need to declare themselves to the group at the start of the ride, so appropriate consideration and action is made for their well-being.

Youth riders should bear in mind the required average pace and duration of the ride and be comfortable in achieving these before participating.

Post Ride Pub Training

Finally, we all like cycling and it appears many of us like pubs too so we’d like to combine these hobbies after the rides on Tuesdays when weather permits. The Queen Inn, just behind the college in Kingsgate Road, is central and also has a big garden for sweaty cyclists with heaters and lots of space where you can keep bikes safe, it would be great if those who fancy a drink could head here to talk of derring dos.
