February’s segment up the (slightly) easier side of Beacon Hill attracted some very close competition, with a number of riders in each competition category coming within a few seconds of each other over the course of the climb.

As a reminder, this year’s competition now has three categories (open men’s, open women’s and senior men’s) and any rider who wishes to enter the men’s senior category, must remove themselves from the men’s open category (and vice-versa).

In the men’s open category competition, Matt Gilmour again took first place by a fine margin, with a time of 3:54, being the only club rider to dip below the 4-minute benchmark. Oscar Hoult was a close second with a time of 04:01. Sam Talent rounded off the podium with a time of 04:11.

In the women’s open category competition, Isla Hoult again led the field, with a winning time of 05:03. Last year’s women’s champion Annie Dixey took second spot, close on Isla’s heels with a time of 05:07. Kate Stoddard closed out third position with a time of 05:22.

In the men’s senior category competition, Alastair Mucklow took first position with a time of 04:57. Jim Cascarini nipped into second with a time of 5:00 exactly. Jamie MacPherson finished in third spot with a time of 05:17.

In the men’s open category GC, Matt Gilmour now holds a lead, six points clear of Oscar Hoult, as they sit in first and second place on 30 and 24 points respectively. Bobby Buenfeld and Sam Talent are tied for third place on 18 points apiece.

In the women’s open category GC, Isla Hoult enjoys an 8-point lead to second place, sitting atop the table on 30 points. Annie Dixey leapfrogs into second place on 22 points and Judit D remains on 12 points, now in third position.

In the men’s senior category GC, Jim Cascarini remains at the head of table on 27 points. Alastair Mucklow has climbed into second spot on 21 points. David Martin, Martin Evans and Jamie MacPherson share the current GC third place, all tied on 18 points.

Many congratulations for the second month running, to both to Isla and Matt who win a free hot drink and slice of cake from South Downs Social café who are again supporting and sponsoring our club’s annual segment of the month competition for the two open categories.

Also, congratulations to Alastair, who wins a £10 voucher for use at Bike-X in Winchester, who are our sponsors for this first year of the men’s senior category of our club’s annual segment of the month competition.

March’s segment leads riders Eastbound up Northington Road from Itchen Abbas, for nearly one and a half miles of undulating terrain. Click the link here to take a look at March’s segment:
