August sees us move West, to Wherwell for a segment that last featured as part of the club’s Segment of The Month competition back in 2020.
The segment starts in the middle of Wherwell Village, as you approach from the East along the B3048, travelling Westbound past the war memorial on your left.
The road climbs gently and curves to the right along the High Street before you take a quick left-right zigzag past the White Lion Inn on your left, and the road kicks up steeply. Press on along the B3420 as you continue to climb towards the sharp right-hand hairpin that is the stand out feature of this half mile segment.
Take the hairpin cautiously, resisting the temptation to cut the corner and cross into oncoming traffic, as you pace your effort carefully, ahead of the final kick. The road continues to climb and then curves to the left, before emerging from the tree line as the gradient begins to level out.
The finish line beckons and you will need to put in a good sprint effort, as you pass the glancing triangular road sign on the opposite side of the road, that marks the segment end.
This half mile climbing segment has an average gradient of 5.5.% with peaks of around 15% making it a punchy challenge for any competitor who wants to place high up on the leader board.
Please remember to obey the rules of the road and remain vigilant for oncoming traffic when attempting to set a time on this segment.
