July’s poor weather was such a contrast to the heat of June, but this didn’t deter a number of riders from putting in good efforts on this month’s segment, along the steady and fast climb up Salt Lane.
In the women’s competition, things were very tight at the top of the monthly leader board.
Annie Dixey took another first place and 15 points with a time of 05:10. Right on Annie’s heels, was Isla Hoult, who took second place and 12 points with a time of 05:13. Kate Stoddard rounded off the podium for August, taking the 10 points available for third place with a time of 05:23.
Annie has now broken the deadlock with Franie Ng and sits top of the women’s GC table on 104 points. Franie holds second spot on 97 points and Isla Hoult now sits in third place on 63 points.
In the men’s competition, Oscar Hoult yet again took first place with a very quick time of 04:15. Jim Cascarini maintained his consistent high performing season, with second place and a time of 04:57, being the only rider other than Oscar to dip below the 5-minute barrier. Third place went to Thunder Thighs (anyone know his real name?) with a time of 05:02.
This means Oscar continues his remarkable winning streak, having claimed full points in every month so far this year, a perfect ‘clean sweep’ record only being denied, due to a tie for first place with Matt Gilmour in June.
Oscar continues to lead the men’s GC table, with 120 points. Jim Cascarini has solidified his second place on GC with 83 points. Matt Gilmour sits in third spot on 42 points. The remainder of the men’s GC table sees the next six riders all within touching distance of each other with between 17 and 24 points. It is still mathematically possible for Jim to catch and overtake Oscar in the GC, with 45 points still on offer. This would however require Jim to win all of the last 3-month’s segments for this year’s competition and simultaneously, for Oscar to score less than 8 points in total over that same period.
Congratulations once again to Oscar and Annie who win the free hot drink and slice of cake from South Downs Social café, who continue to kindly support and sponsor our club’s annual segment of the month competition.
August’s segment takes us West to Wherwell, for a sharp and punchy climb.
